General presentation

On January 8th, 2011, both Presidents of King Abdulaziz University and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, together with Dr. Khalid bin Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Al Anqari, Ministry of Higher Education, signed an agreement for the creation of a joint chaire dedicated to research about ethics and financial norms. This subject emphasizes the world leadership of the Islamic Economics Institute (previously known as Islamic Economics Research Center), home to the Journal of King Abdulaziz University — Islamic Economics (referenced by EconLit, JEL and SCOPUS). Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne also has an expertise in financial regulation through its founding contributions to both the CNRS European Research Group in "Money-Banking-Finance", which features an "Islamic Finance" subgroup, and the "Financial Regulation" Excellence Lab.

The chaire made its debut in may 2011, with a monthly seminar bringing together through videoconference link the scholars of the Islamic Economics Institute, the Girls' department of the King Abdulaziz University and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The first instances displayed the interdisciplinary approach of the chair, relying on economics, finance, history and law: on May 4, Professor Abdul Azim Islahi presented a communication about contributions of Islamic thought to social and institutional forms of economics. On June 1st, Hugues Martin-Sisteron and Maha Gabbani introduced the compatibility of French legal framework with the profit and loss sharing principles in project financing.  On 14 September 14th, Dr Suwailem gave a presentation of his essay “Hedging in islamic finance”.

On the (October 5), Armen Papazian gave a speech about money creation under constraint of sovereign debt borrowing... Next sessions are scheduled on the first Wednesday of forthcoming months.
